Wow! Where the heck did January go? Time flies when you're having fun…. and so we enter February! It’s chock full of really cool food celebrations. Did you know that February is Great American Pie Month! Pie month! A whole month of pies! Pinch me…am I dreaming? And that’s just the beginning!
First we have to get the business of the month out of the way, so on the 2nd , Punxatawney Phil wakes from his deep winter sleep, steps out of his hole, sticks his index finger in his mouth, pulls it out and puts it up in the air. It really has nothing to do with seeing his shadow, but the limelight has caused old Phil to go a little whacko. Anyway, if he sees his shadow, they’ll be six more weeks of winter weather. Time to break out your copy of Groundhog Day and enjoy a good, hearty laugh as Bill Murray relives the same day over and over and over again….sort of like watching Congress.
Business now over we can concentrate on the important stuff of February! Like how about a nice, big stuffed mushroom! Grab a carton of baby bella’s and let your imagination be your guide because February 4th is National Stuffed Mushroom Day!! Crab, spicy pork, shrimp, cream cheese! The stuffing combinations are endless! What’s not to like?! If you want to go a little retro, grab your fondue pot that’s waaaay back there in the cabinet, give it a good scrub and get ready to get your chocolate crump on. February 5th is National Chocolate Fondue Day! How about a chocolate dipped strawberry or chunk of fresh pineapple? Or some angel food cake, banana slice, cherries, marshmallows, pound cake….need I say more?
Mamma Mia!! February 7th is National Fettuccine Alfredo Day. Is there really anything more decadent than butter, cream, cheese and a plate of tender egg fettuccine noodles? I don’t think so. My only regret it’s celebrated but one day a year! You gotta know I’ll be celebrating this day without a doubt!
Bubeleh! Don’t be a schmuck and miss out on the 9th when we get to enjoy National Bagels and Lox Day. A nice toasted bagel, a tempting schmeer of cream cheese, some lovely smoked salmon, a smattering of capers, thinly sliced onion, all topped off with a bit of chopped dill and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice! It’s pure simchas! Breakfast, lunch or dinner, oy vey, it’s a great meal!
If you have any cream cheese left over from the fabulous Bagels and Lox feast, you can use it on the 10th because it’s Cream Cheese Brownie day. If you’re a fan of brownies (and you know who you are!) try a pan of these lovelies! Feel free to share your recipe too if you have one!
Ain’t no party like a New Orleans party and that’s a fact! February 12th is FAT TUESDAY! While the celebrations have been going on since January in the Big Easy, Fat Tuesday marks the last day to eat, drink and be merry. Wednesday, the 13th, all that goes away as the lent begins, marked by Ash Wednesday for our Catholic friends. It’s a day of fasting and repentance as they are reminded that they will return to ashes one day. Even if you’re not Catholic, it’s not a bad idea to stop and reflect, eh? Of course, Wednesday is also National Tortellini Day. A bowl of cheese filled tortellini is some chicken stock makes for a lovely soup. Or with some leftover Alfredo sauce (like there would ever BE such a thing….like leftover wine…pure fiction!) …anyway, meat filled tortellini with a hearty tomato sauce….stick to your ribs! Challenge yourself and make your own. No machine needed!! Just your hands and your imagination!!
Love is in the air! I can feel it….it’s February 14th…...Valentines Day! Flowers, chocolates, romantic dinners. How lovely….now back to reality. Sometimes a simple ‘Happy Valentines Day’ and a big hug does the trick too. It’s the love that counts! Point being, extravagant or simple, just remember to remember that special person in your life!
Sometimes you feel like a nut….so how about celebrating National Almond Day on the 16th! Did you know that almonds are one of the ‘super foods’. A one ounce serving of almonds contains 6 grams of protein, it’s cholesterol free (which makes it a complete protein without any animal fats), it very low in carbs, and full of minerals that your body needs. What a great snack that’s also extremely good for you, so enjoy!
Now that we’re all healthier, how about imbibing a bit! February 18th is Drink Wine Day. Honestly, do I need to say any more than that?!? I’m thinking….not!
Hey! Remember, February is Great American Pie Month! I’d say it’s special pie since it has it’s very own day of recognition in the very month of great American pies! The 20th is National Cherry Pie Day. Classic! Another classic? Sticky buns. Oh yeah, babe. Sticky buns. Ooey. Gooey. Pecans, brown sugar, butter, a bit of cinnamon….all slowly sliding down the sides of a sweet roll dough….the 21st is your excuse to indulge because it’s National Sticky Bun Day. Lordy lordy.
On a bit healthier note, February 23rd is National Banana Bread Day. There are probably as many versions of banana bread as there are bananas, but bottom line….a nice slice of moist banana bread and a cup of coffee go hand in hand. Try adding a handful of blueberries to your next quick bread. And don’t forget the walnuts or pecans!!
To bean or not to bean? That is the question. I’m talking about chili, of course. Cook up a big pot of your favorite on the 25th in honor of National Chili Day. Texas chili….real Texas chili…...no beans please. Not to say that chili with is bad. It’s all a matter of what you like. And then there’s the whole question of heat! Hot and spicy! Oh yeah! Or meek and mild…hey, some folks just can’t take the heat. Which ever way you like to make your chili, it doesn’t matter. Just do it! And don’t forget the cornbread!
I’d say that February is pretty full of fabulous and amazing fare. Wow! After finding all these wonderful foodie holidays to celebrate, I’m looking forward to the 27th . After searching out all that there is to cook and eat in February, the old brain pan gets a rest cause it’s NO BRAINER DAY!! Thanks. I needed that.
So tell us! What’s Cooking at your house this month!?
