Can you believe it? It’s March, the last month of the first quarter of 2013. Already! That means that Old Man Winter has just about finished his work for the season and the spring quinox will soon be upon us. Out with the cold and in with the warm, eh!?
Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? Time to give some thought about making smarter choices while still eating the foods you love. Except you don't have to eat brocolli if you don't want to. Or brussel sprouts for that matter.
March 1 is National Peanut Butter Lovers Day. On bread with your favorite jam or jelly, in a cookie or on fruit or straight out of the jar, creamy or smooth….it’s not only good tasting but good for you! It’s a great source of protein and fiber. Grab a spoon and dig in!
If pie is your favorite, you’ll love March 2nd because it’s National Banana Cream Pie Day! Not exactly health food, but then there are bananas in it! And if you want to kick it up a few notches, try Emerils version…. …. Oh, yeah, babe! BAM!
How about a slice of Pound Cake? March 4th celebrates this classic cake. The cake got it’s name from the four ingredients it’s made from. A pound each of flour, sugar, eggs and butter. Feel free to add in some lemon or orange zest too. Simple and elegant and great served with freshly sliced strawberries or peaches.
On a more healthy note, March 7th is National Cereal Day. Break away from eggs and bacon and instead opt for a bowl of oats or wheat. Whole grains are important for good digestion and heart health so enjoy your favorite cereal often. Try something new too! Cook up some steel cut Irish oats. Nutty flavor that will keep you going all morning long!
One of my personal favorites comes on March 9th as we drop our nets in the water to celebrate National Crabmeat Day! Luckily various types are readily available at most grocery stores. King, Snow, Dungeness…precooked so heat and eat! The meat is sweet and rich enough that you don’t even need butter for dipping! Just crack open and savor!!
I can’t believe it, but it’s already time to spring forward as Daylight Savings Time begins on March 10th. That means you should one hour on Saturday, March 9th when you go to bed. Cost? One hour of blissful sleep. Not to worry. You’ll gain that hour back in November. Yeah, November. ugh.
March 20th brings the first day of Spring! Winter weather will soon turn to warmer temps and more enjoyable outdoor time. Good time to start thinking about your herb and vegetable garden plantings. And if you haven’t already, it’s also a good time to break out the grill and cook your favorite proteins over an open fire!
Hey! Guess what! March 21st in National French Bread Day! Time to break out your sourdough starter or a spoonful of yeast and try your hand at this crunch loaf! And by the way, the French get the credit but the original baguette bread was first created in Vienna, a people who, without a doubt, know a few things about baking!
Another healthy choice and great snack food is celebrated on March 25th! Hail the Pecan! Not only is it a great nut to munch on but makes a great addition to all sorts of breads and desserts. You can even purchase Pecan Oil. It sure cooks up a mean piece of fish, especially if you top off the fish with some chopped pecans. However you choose to use them, the pecan is a great source of 6 Omega fatty-acids and trace minerals.
How about some not-so-healthy but oh-so-yummy cakes to round out the month!? On the 28th we salute National Black Forest Cake. Whipped cream and cherry filling with a nice slosh of liqueurs may not be health food but it’s truly an excellent choice for dessert! Or maybe you prefer to wait for the clock to roll around another 24 hours as March 29th is National Lemon Chiffon Cake Day. Or maybe, since you’ve been making smarter choices all month so give yourself a reward and have a slice of each!
