It is with great sadness that I must announce that this will be the last month for the What’s Cooking forums. While it’s been fun, the lagging number of participants and fewer and fewer posts, I see no point in going on. I hope you all understand and remember each other with fondness as the doors slowly close. Without further ado, I give you the final What's Cooking thread.....
April Fools! Ha! Gotcha! So relax and get ready for another fun month of food and cooking!! We ain’t goin’ nowhere! I mean where else would you learn that April is National BLT month!? Seriously! It’s also National Garlic Month and National Grilled Cheese Month! Are you kidding me??!? We could stop right here and be satisfied for the entire month!! But we're not because there is even more!!
Near and dear to my heart, April 1st is National Sourdough Bread day! What a great way to kick of the month with a sourdough English muffin or a slice of sourdough boule, nicely grilled and drizzled with a bit of flavorful olive oil and a sprinkling of sea salt! Or how about some nice spicy Italian roast beef, sliced thin and served on a generous slice of sourdough ciabatta! No matter how you serve it, there aren’t many folk whole pass on a good hunk of sourdough! And if you don’t have your starter yet, let me know because you’re really missing out!
More food celebrations on April 2nd with National Peanut Butter and Jelly day. The sweetness of your favorite jam or jelly blended with the salty, creamy peanut butter is not only very American but good eats! It’s not just for kids so pour yourself a tall glass of ice cold milk and enjoy a PB&J for lunch!! If your palate is craving something a bit more fancy, wait no further. April 4th is National Cordon Bleu day. While there are many recipes, the basic idea is chicken breast, pounded thin, wrapped around a nice slice of swiss cheese and ham, then breaded and baked. Feel free to add your favorite sauce and you’ve got a simply prepared yet very elegant dinner, certain to impress your family and friends!
Gosh, not a moment to waste as April 7th is Coffee Cake day! You don’t really hear much about this classic recipe from the 50’s and 60’s, with it’s streusel topping and soft texture. Very retro but still good eats! Next time you’re in the mood for something a bit sweet at breakfast, put down that muffin recipe and bake yourself a nice coffee cake!
If you’d prefer something gooey, April 12th is National Cheese Sandwich day. I say gooey because there’s no law against slapping some butter on the outside of that sandwich and dropping it on the nearest griddle or frying pan and getting that cheese to melt. Heck, you’d be celebrating two food holidays at once! Don’t forget it's also National Grilled Cheese Month too!
Back to the sweeter things in life, April 13th is National Peach Cobbler day. Fresh peaches , sweet dough for the cobbler, a few pinches of cinnamon…served warm from the oven with a scoop or two of ice cream?! Does it really get any better than that!?
We interupt our regularly scheduled programming to remind you that it is April 15th. Time to finish the 9,305,544 forms you need to fill out so that you can pay your tax bill for 2012. When you're done with all that nonsense, feel free to have a cocktail.......only 364 days till you have to do it all over again. Now back to our programming.....
One of my favorite breakfasts is celebrated on April 16th…National Eggs Benedict day! Here’s the blueprint: toasted English muffin topped with a slice of Canadian bacon, then a nicely poached egg, crowned by a rich Hollandaise sauce. It’s truly a very rich fare fit for a King or a Queen!
April 19th is Garlic day! If everybody enjoys this day you won’t have to worry about your breath! Not only does garlic taste good but it’s good for you. One easy way to enjoy roasted garlic is to cut a whole head of garlic in half, place both halves in some aluminum foil, drizzle on a bit of olive oil, close up the pack and bake for 20 to 30 minutes. See! That was easy! Now you have freshly roasted garlic to schmeer all over a nicely toasted slice of bread. A bit more olive oil and sea salt and you’ll never have to endure store-bought garlic bread again!
April 23rd is National Cherry Cheesecake day. I don’t really think I have to convince anybody on how scrumptious this dessert is. All you need are your eyeballs! Grab a fork!!
In the mood for something a bit elegant perhaps? How about National Prime Rib day, celebrated on April 27th! Served very rare with a bit of au jus, it’s an entrée sure to warm the cockles of your heart. Or maybe you want to skip the beef and wait for April 29th when you can enjoy National Shrimp Scampi day! Shrimp, garlic and butter! Need I say more?! Oh, yeah…a bit of wine in there too! Serve the sizzling shrimp over a bed of fettuccine noodles to sop up the garlicky butter! MMMM-MM!
Well, there you have it! Sourdough bread, grilled cheese, garlic. The three food groups all in the same month with lots of other goodies stashed in between! Something here for everyone! And if that doesn't do it for ya, don't forget that BLT!!
What’s Cooking at your house this month!?
